1. Sanctioned Competitions

Two new competitions have been sanctioned by the IPF and EPF. Firstly, an IPF International Tournament will be held in Orebro. Lifters, will be invited from USA, Great Britain, Russia, Norway, Finland, Ukraine and Sweden. The sanction is valid under the condition that only lifters from IPF member federations will be invited. The second sanctioned competition is an EPF Saar-Lor-Lux Championships, for lifters from the German State of Saarland, the French region of Lorraine and Luxembourg.

2. 1999 European Masters Powerlifting Championships

The 1999 European Masters Powerlifting Championships were held in Luxembourg. The championships were very large but were one of the best ever in terms of organisation. The standard of organisation set in Luxembourg must be maintained if powerlifting is to progress. The EPF would like to thank Gaston Parage and all those who helped him, especially the loaders. Despite the large number of lifters, the speed of the loaders ensured that the competition ran smoothly and kept to schedule.

3. 1999 EU Cup

The 1999 EU Cup was held in the beautiful town of Villefranche sur Saone. Unfortunately, Villefranche is a popular holiday destination and many of the hotels were full. This forced late-booking teams to stay in accomdation which was up to 50km from the venue. A further problem was that some lifters claimed that they had to lift with an weightlifting bar. However, the competition was an overall sucess and thanks are due to the organiser, Andre Dumonet and all who helped him. Worthy of note is the unusual result of the team event, where Great Britain and France tied for first place in both the Men's and Women's competitions.

4. Elvira Wallauch

The Austrian Powerlifting Federation and in particular its president, Norbert Wallauch, suffered a great loss in July when both Walter Legel and Elvira Wallauch died of cancer. Walter was 59 years old and was a European Masters Powerlifting Champion. Elvira was 39 years old, and had represented Austria at World and European powerlifting championships. She had won the national championships a total of ten times, and still holds Austrian records in squat and deadlift. In memory of Elvira, an Austrian Cup tournament will be help each year, and Norbert Wallauch has vowed to continue to put all his energy into working for the sport of powerlifting.
