Danube Cup, Slovakia

The 7th Danube Cup in Slovakia was a big success for the organisers from the Sport of Powerlifting. The Meet Director, Josef Ovsianca, found a very special location, with the hotel, restaurant and competition venue all under the same roof. Consequently, no transportation was necessary. The hotel was situated on the top of a mountain, surrounded by forest and snow, and the sun was shining each day. The competition witnessed a lot of excellent lifting, especially the women who set a number of new Danube records. One record was also in the men's competition. The referees were of a high standard and loaders were excellent - it was necessary to slow down the for the heavier classes to give them time to recover! The banquet was also very nice and full of good food. So all in all it was a very good championships.

The only negative was that the Hotel rates were much higher than the normal tourist prices, a reason for the German team to boycott the meet. Two days after the the end of the championships, the EPF secretary received a very harsh letter of complaint against the hotel prices from Slovenia. Instead of the normal rate of 18DM it was 60DM per person. The Slovenian Federation wrote "It is not fair that organising federation tried to get profit from competitors and officials from other countries. If they have financial problems they should NOT NOT NOT organise international competition." The German team also told me that at the 1996 Baltic Cup in Slovenia thet realized the hotel prices were not correct. If the organisers do not stop the kind of money raising witnessed at the Baltic Cup they will destroy the future of international powerlifting championships. In future, Meet Directors are asked to ensure that hotel prices are no higher than it is for the standard rate. It is common courtesy not only to make the best for guests, but also to make it as cheap as possible.
