SEPTEMBER 2002 EPF NEWSLETTER

European Masters Bench Press Championships: The 2002 European Masters Bench Press Championships were held in Nymburk, Czech Republic, from 15 to 18 August. Fortunately, the host city was not directly affected by the floods which swept through Europe. However, a number of teams, in particular Germany and Austria, experienced travel problems because of the flooding in their home nations. Despite the floods, a total of 204 athletes took part in what proved to be a good championships.

European Bench Press Championships: The Czech Federation also hosted the 2002 European Bench Press Championships, which were held in Nymburk one week after the Masters. Once again, the flooding disrupted the travel plans of some nations. 171 athletes eventually arrived in Nymburk and the lifting was of a very high standard, with a total of four new world records and five new European records. The EPF General Secretary, Heiner Köberich, described the championships as being "one of the best bench open meets ever". The EPF would like to thank the Czech Federation, its president and meet director Mira Vacek, and the technical director Jiri Hofirek. The experiment of organising two bench championships at the same venue over consecutive weekends proved very successful.

Membership Fees: Slovenia, and Portugal have still not paid their 2002 EPF Memberships Fees. These nations are suspended from the EPF and IPF, excluding them from future European and World Championships. In order to lift their suspensions, the Federations must pay the Membership Fee of €250, plus a €80 fine for late payment.

EPF Newsletter: The EPF newsletter will now be sent by email rather than posted to the national federations. The newsletter and championships invitations will also continue to be published on the EPF website, www.europowerlifting.org.
